The ISCIII, in its role as a funding agency for health and biomedical research, participates in different research programmes, both European and international, together with R+D+I funding bodies from these countries. The main objective of these public-public partnerships is to develop joint research and innovation agendas and implement them through calls for transnational research projects. The budget comes from national funds, where each national agency finances the research of its own country, generally co-financed by the European Union. In the case of the ISCIII, this funding is executed through the Acción estratégica en salud (AES).
Through international collaboration projects (PCIN), the ISCIII finances the participation of Spanish entities that are members of transnational consortia that have previously participated in international calls. PCIN contributes to:
- Promote the internationalisation of the NHS. In this way, it contributes to improving the
- excellence and competitiveness of NHS researchers, through the establishment of scientific
- collaborations.
- Reinforce participation in areas of strategic interest through funding directed to specific
- research topics.
- Create a body of NHS researchers in emerging areas such as Personalised Medicine.
- The generation of national science capital.
- Constitute a way of co-financing collaborative projects with EC funding.
