About us
The National Centre for Epidemiology (CNE) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) aims to generate information and scientific evidence to support decision-making in public health. Its activities include epidemiological surveillance, research, training, and the provision of scientific and technical advice to the National Health System (SNS) and the Spanish System of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTI).
The CNE conducts monitoring, analytical, and research activities on the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as their associated risk factors, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the autonomous communities, and other national and international organizations.

CNE work and Research Areas
CNE activities are organized into two major thematic areas and three cross-cutting areas that support research, epidemiological surveillance, and the generation of evidence for public health.
Thematic Areas
Communicable diseases and epidemiological surveillance: Monitoring, analysis, and research on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, epidemic outbreaks, and public health alerts and emergencies.
Chronic diseases and population health: Study of chronic diseases, mortality, ageing, disability, and mental health.
Cross-cutting Areas
Health behavior and determinants of health: Research on cognitive, social, and contextual factors that drive or hinder health-related behaviors at the individual, community, and population levels, with the aim of designing more effective strategies and improving health for all.
Advanced epidemiological methods and causal analysis: Development and application of advanced epidemiological and statistical methods for data analysis, causal inference, and the evaluation of public health policies and interventions.
Strategic and institutional projects: Coordination and development of projects of particular relevance to the public health system, including national and international initiatives and collaborative projects with other institutions.
